Telephone and Internet Savings
The cost of telephone and Internet access can be a significant cost for a small business. I recently discovered that significant savings can be made by signing up with Homecall. They have a package of free UK phone calls plus broadband Internet all for £24.99 per month plus you can sign up for line rental for another £9.99 per month with no further need to deal with BT. Of course this package is aimed at residential customers, but if you can manage without the benefit of a business line, you should have no problem. The package is provided by Phones4U.
Since starting with this package, I have found some limitations. There is no server side scripting provided, which makes it impossible to collect information about people who download without going off-site. Eventually, I had to move to a separate hosting company. A trial of several sites, and a trawl of Internet forums led me to choose an American company with unparalleled customer support. This was Lunar. If you have a need for a host, have a look at their offer. Adding the forums to this site was a dream.
Homecall has recently been acquired by Pipex. I was looking at the offer by TalkTalk and phoned up for my MAC code and was offered an immediate £5 in cash and in September 2006, a new package by Pipex that would be £5 a month cheaper, and up to 8Mb. This is not quite as cheap as TalkTalk, but avoids the problem with changing supplier. I know TalkTalk is currently overwhelmed by new customers. Moral is, whoever you are with, try talking about disconnection, and see what they offer.
