The minimum hardware requirements are a standard PC with a processor speed of 300MHz or greater, with keyboard, monitor, simple sound system and mouse; and a standard ink jet printer, for reports. To print receipts and shelf edge labels with an ink jet printer, it is better to have a pass through slot at the rear of the printer, as the normal paper handling mechanism cannot handle the small pieces of paper used. This will do for demonstrating the suitability of the program, and it has served some retailers for years. To this, you should add a laser hands free scanner, to read in the bar codes. Choose one with a keyboard wedge interface. CCD scanners are a cheaper option, but can be tedious to use in practice, as they need to be held at the correct distance from the bar code, and generally require a trigger button to be pressed which precludes hands-free operation. They are unsuitable for reading the larger case codes. Most practical situations would require the addition of a receipt printer and cash drawer. We recommend a thermal receipt printer, which is fast, quiet and can include an automatic paper cut-off mechanism. Cash drawers attach to an outlet at the back of the receipt printer. An ink jet printer will still be required for reports. There is no need to locate and install Windows drivers for your receipt printer or scanner, as they are not used by the program. Supported printers are selected in the settings screen, reached from the file menu. The drive program is included within the program. If buying a computer, choose a processor speed of at least 500MHz and with the current low memory prices, at very least 512MB of RAM. A hard disk needs to be at least 2GB and preferably 20GB. A 15-inch monitor is recommended, either using a CRT, or an LCD screen which will take up far less valuable counter space. A CD R/W drive is definitely desirable for backups. An Internet connection is needed for updates to the program and for e-mail support. Future extensions with exciting possibilities may require access to the Internet.
