Backing up the database is important in a retail environment. ProffittCenter provides a number of facilities to make this straightforward. The working database is stored in a single directory called till located as a subdirectory at c: \Program Files\ProffittCenter with the default installation of the program. The program maintains two copies of this data in the two directories, Backup and Backup2. Each time the Cashing up screen is used and printed, the contents of Backup are copied to Backup2 and then the contents of till are copied to Backup. Thus at the end of each day there will be a copy of the database at the end of day, and a copy of the database at the end of the previous day. If a writable CD drive is available, selected in the "Settings" screen, the database will also be saved to a CD. Ensure that a suitable CD is already inserted and prepared for writing before cashing up. The database will be saved under a file name composed of the day's date. This action can also be initiated by the menu action File |Database |Backup on CD. When a faulty database is detected, first try to repair it using the menu item 'File |Database |Repair'. This runs an excellent repair program that can cope with most errors. If this program is unsuccessful, the Backup from the previous night can be reinstated by the menu option File |Database |Replace with backup, or, with CD support, File |Database |Replace with CD backup. In the latter case it is necessary to select the data directory with the mouse. The previous day's backup is not available via the program, but can be copied using Windows functions. One final menu option in the settings screen is New alias. This allows a different directory to the default directory c: \Program Files\ProffittCenter\till to be selected. Use this to select a different drive when the program has been installed on a different drive to c. An experimental option is to install a second version of ProffittCenter on a networked back office computer, and select the same database as the installation at the cash point. The drive involved needs to be shared. This second version is safe for deliveries, but the other functions should not be used. [Previous] [Main] [Next] |
